The meaning of selfstudy, an offshoot of necessity.

Sometimes, you need to do things yourself.

Organic chemical nomenclature is a vast and complex set of concepts, akin to the philosophy of Father Roque Ferriols, S.J., or the field of mathematics, or any number of things easier done than explained.

So, after burning myself out answering online quizzes and worksheets from school, I randomly conceived of my own compound, adding doodles and atoms without abandon. After naming each branch lovingly, individually, I birthed an organic acid. I’m not absolutely sure about the standard name (especially the butenyl and dioic acid bits), but its common name is pretty self-explanatory.

Common name:

pacoic acid

IUPAC name:

4-(3-butenyl)-3,8-dimethyl-9-(2-(3-hydroxycyclohexa-1,3,5-trienyl)ethyl))-11-(1-(N-ethyl-N-propylamino)methyl)pentadec-8-en-5-yn-1,15-dioic acid

It’s pretty cute, actually. Just somewhat hulking and pointed every which way.
